Arrival at LAX
If you’ve not been to LAX, it’s a very large and very confusing airport. Especially when, after 5 hours in the air, you realize that although the clock on the wall says that it’s 9:30 p.m. you know that to your brain it’s really after midnight and well into Eddie and my normal sleep cycle.
When we trail through the airport usually Eddie leads and I bring up the rear so that we make sure nobody gets left behind. I’ve threatened to get one of those little pointers that look like an old car radio antenna like tour guides use so it’s easier to follow.
After the usual game of luggage roulette (we weren’t first but everything came through successfully with the exception of Jordan’s bag – apparently the Samsonite Gorilla was lose again and jumped up and down on the hair gel she was carrying, causing a seam to blow out) we caught the “Blue Shuttle” for a ride to the hotel about 45 minutes away.
The driver, an older man who said little, was exciting to say the least. It’s a good thing that we’d been used to riding with teenagers who were still learning, because he drove a lot the same way – sudden jerky movements, and at one point as we were traversing West Hollywood to avoid a traffic jam on the freeway, he pulled out in front of another car to mutter, “yeah, yeah,” when the horns went off.
It was almost like being in Italy again.
Hotel check in was a breeze. It’s the Universal City Hilton, just a few blocks from Universal Studios. They were ready for us and we were headed to the elevator by the time all the luggage was out of the van.
Did I mention that I love the new “You brought it, you tote it” rule that we’ve implemented??
The only thing that was less than great was to discover that each room had 2 full size beds. Not queen size. Not king size. When you put us “plus-size” people in them, it means that its gonna be a tight fit, like it or not. It also means there’s not much in the way of covers to fight over.
